Factory holiday guide · updated Monday, 5 October 2026

Chinese New Year 2027
is Saturday 6 February.

Factories in China and Vietnam close for weeks around it, not days. Here is when, what to do about it, and the rest of the year's closures in the three countries we make in.

The season, at a glance.

Typical for most factories in China and Vietnam. Your supplier's own dates decide it — ask for them in writing.

What to do, month by month.

Our advice to every buyer with goods due in the first quarter.
  1. 01 · October Place the order.

Anything that has to land before the holiday, or in March, should be ordered now. For most factories October is the last comfortable month — after it, your order queues behind everyone else's pre-holiday rush.

  2. 02 · November Sign off samples and lock materials.

Changes after this point cost more time than they did a month earlier. Approve the sample, confirm the fabric and trims, and keep the specification still.

  3. 03 · December – early January Production runs. Book freight early.

Ocean and air space tighten and rates rise in the weeks before the holiday, as every factory tries to ship at once. Book as soon as you have a ready date.

  4. 04 · February – March Plan around a slow restart.

Factories come back over two to four weeks after the Lantern Festival (Sat 20 Feb), not all workers return, and first output is slower. Don't hang a March launch on post-holiday production.

Three countries, three calendars.

The 2027 closures that stop production where we make things.

China

Closes hardest for Chinese New Year, and again for the October Golden Week.

  • Sat 6 Feb Chinese New Year Date set, official schedule pending Lunar New Year's Day is fixed. The official holiday block, with its make-up working days, is published by the State Council — expected November 2026. Factories close well beyond it: see the timeline above.
  • Mon 5 Apr Qingming (Tomb-Sweeping Day) Date set, official schedule pending Usually a three-day weekend. Little effect on production.
  • Sat 1 May Labour Day Date set, official schedule pending A multi-day break; the official block is set in the State Council notice.
  • Wed 9 Jun Dragon Boat Festival Date set, official schedule pending Usually a three-day weekend.
  • Wed 15 Sept Mid-Autumn Festival Date set, official schedule pending Usually a short break.
  • 1–7 Oct National Day — Golden Week Date set, official schedule pending The second-biggest shutdown of the year. Production slows in the week before, and some suppliers return late.

Vietnam

Closes for Tết at the same time as China — the two do not offset each other.

  • 4–10 Feb Tết (Lunar New Year) Official Seven days for the public sector, approved by the government. Factories set their own break and commonly close longer, with a slow return after.
  • Fri 16 Apr Hung Kings Commemoration Day Date set, official schedule pending One day.
  • 30 Apr–1 May Reunification Day and Labour Day Date set, official schedule pending Two consecutive public holidays.
  • 2–5 Sept National Day Official Four days for the public sector, approved by the government.

Bangladesh

Works straight through Chinese New Year. Its long breaks are the two Eids, which move with the moon.

  • Wed 10 Mar Eid al-Fitr Expected — confirmed by moon sighting Expected around 9–10 March, confirmed by moon sighting. Garment factories close for a block around Eid — up to about ten days in 2026.
  • Fri 26 Mar Independence Day Fixed date One day.
  • Wed 14 Apr Pohela Boishakh (Bengali New Year) Fixed date One day.
  • Mon 17 May Eid al-Adha Expected — confirmed by moon sighting Expected around 16–17 May, confirmed by moon sighting. Factories close for a block around it.
  • Thu 16 Dec Victory Day Fixed date One day.

Questions buyers ask us every year.

When is Chinese New Year 2027?

Lunar New Year's Day falls on Saturday, 6 February 2027, the start of the Year of the Goat. The Lantern Festival, which traditionally closes the season, is on Saturday, 20 February 2027.

How long do factories in China close for Chinese New Year?

The official public holiday is about a week, but factories close for much longer. Production typically slows two to three weeks before New Year's Day, and factories come back over two to four weeks after the Lantern Festival as workers return from their home provinces. Plan on six weeks or more of disruption.

When should I place orders to beat Chinese New Year 2027?

By the end of October for most factories, if the goods need to ship before the holiday or arrive in March. Orders placed later compete with every other buyer's pre-holiday rush for production slots and freight space.

When will China announce the official 2027 holiday dates?

China's State Council publishes the following year's public holiday schedule, including make-up working days, in its annual notice — expected November 2026. We update this page when it is out.

Do factories in Vietnam close for Chinese New Year too?

Yes. Vietnam celebrates the same Lunar New Year as Tết, and its factories close at the same time — so moving an order from China to Vietnam does not avoid the holiday. The government has approved a seven-day Tết break for the public sector in 2027, and factories commonly close for longer.

Does Bangladesh close for Chinese New Year?

No. Bangladesh works straight through the Lunar New Year. Its long factory breaks are the two Eids, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, which move each year with the Islamic calendar — in 2027, expected in March and May.
